Fall is Here! Make way for the “superfoods”..Cranberries

When the seasons change, a new harvest of foods becomes available for the eFresh Chefs to draw inspiration. 

From football game snacks, back-to-school lunches, and quick eFresh Meals week-night dinners--the possibilities are endless. 

And that brings us to our Meal of the Week!

Yummy grilled chicken breast with fall cranberries, rice pilaf and ginger glazed carrots. Nothing says “fall meals” like cranberries.

The cranberry harvest takes place once a year from mid-September through early November, making cranberries a true fall festive fruit that are native to North America

Cranberries bounce! It’s true. small pockets of air inside the fruit enable it to bounce and float.

Cranberries are considered a “superfood” due to their high nutrient and antioxidant content. In fact, research has linked the nutrients in cranberries to a lower risk of urinary tract infection (UTI), the prevention of certain types of cancer, improved immune function, and decreased blood pressure.

Indigenous people  would combine cranberries, fat and ground venison to make a survival cake known as pemmican, recognizing the true benefits of cranberries.

Cranberries can help whiten your teeth. What? Cranberries have natural flavonoids in them that can help prevent the growth of plaque, bacteria and gum disease.

And of course, one of the best all time alt rock bands takes their name for the yummy superfood..The Cranberries.
