The Power of Coffee!
The smell, the boldness, the flavour, the first sip! When you think of coffee, you may appreciate that early morning jumpstart to your routine. Our attachment to our morning cuppa may cause us to feel a love-hate relationship with it, but there are so many reasons why coffee, when consumed properly has health benefits too!
Let’s not discount the benefits of caffeine in moderation. Caffeine can get a bad reputation since we tend to consume it in large quantities and often alongside sugar and other harmful chemicals, but moderation is key. Caffeine provides energy, which can help with our performance and physical activity, but is actually known to help brain function as well. If you feel the fog lift after your morning cup of coffee, you’re not alone! Studies have shown that coffee can improve our brain’s cognitive function.
Here are a few other benefits to coffee that you may not know about:
- Coffee boosts your metabolism – coffee is a stimulant that is able to increase your metabolic rate. This can assist with fat burning and weight loss when consumed in moderation and accompanied by a healthy diet and active lifestyle.
- Coffee contains vitamins and nutrients—coffee contains magnesium, manganese, potassium and vitamin B2 (also known as Riboflavin!), and vitamin B5, just to name a few!
- Coffee contains antioxidants—coffee is renowned for being chalked full of antioxidants, and therefore many studies have shown that coffee can help to prevent ailments or diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and even various forms of cancer as well.
Now, these benefits won’t mean anything if you rush to your nearest coffee shop and order the largest, sugary drink on the menu! There are a few ways that you can enjoy these benefits, without the typical drawbacks of coffee consumption and the traps that many average coffee drinkers may fall into. Here’s how to keep your coffee healthy:
Do not load your coffee with refined white sugars
Adding sugar to your daily coffee can do more harm than good. Check out our blog about the dangers of consuming too much sugar on a daily basis. If you cannot possibly enjoy your cup of coffee unless it is sweetened in some form or another, there are alternative, natural sweeteners out there that you can try.
Consume coffee in moderation
The phrase “too much of a good thing” holds a lot of weight when it comes to coffee consumption and caffeine. Health Canada recommends approximately 1-2 cups of coffee per day for the average consumer. Drinking too much coffee can cause adverse side effects such as insomnia, anxiety and digestive issues.
Avoid artificial creamers or “whiteners”
These may taste delicious, but they can contain hidden sugars and chemicals that you aren’t accounting for in your daily intake. Coffee is healthiest when consumed black, however, adding a splash of dairy milk, cream, almond milk or oat milk is a less detrimental alternative than artificial creamers. Again, moderation is key.
