We’re Spilling the Beans on Beans Today!

Beans need a little more press! Not only are they versatile and delicious, but they have quite a few surprising health benefits that you may not have known about. We can’t wait to share these fun facts about beans!

First…What Are Beans?

Did you know that beans are neither veggie nor fruit? They’re seeds from a flowering plant and technically classified as legumes. In the same family, you’ll find peas, lentils, chickpeas and peanuts! As for the beans, there are many different varieties to choose from: red beans, soy beans, lima beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, and the list goes on! All of them make a delicious addition to just about any meal, as they can easily absorb the flavours and spices that they are cooked with.

Now Here’s Why Beans Are So Awesome:

1. They’re Protein Packed!

Beans are high in amino acids and make them a great source of protein. They can often be included as a protein packed meat alternative that’s also low in saturated fats, and are often the top choice for vegetarians and vegans. This also makes them an excellent protein alternative to dairy products as well.

2. Antioxidants

Great news! Eating beans as part of your regular diet can help you ward off disease and illness. This is because many beans are full of antioxidants and help to protect your body from free radicals. This will help you fight off any disease or illnesses you come across, which we all know is very important.

3. They Help You Stay Satiated and Feel Full Longer

Beans are full of fibre and starches that contribute to feeling full and satiated for long periods of time. This helps to prevent overindulgence, unnecessary snacking, and packing on unnecessary calories to your meals. Fibre-rich beans also contribute to a healthy digestive system and a happy and healthy gut.

4. They Help Reduce Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure

Another incredible benefit of beans is that they can also help to stabilize blood sugar levels and contribute to overall lower blood pressure. So not only will you have a happy stomach and digestive tract, but you will have a happier and healthier heart as well.
