We are coming into tomato season and we couldn’t be happier!
Tomatoes are a super diverse fruit (yes, for those of you who don’t already know, tomatoes are a fruit!) that we often prepare and treat like a vegetable. These bright red beauties are a flavour staple that also happens to be incredibly nutritious. Not only that, but they can be prepared in so many different ways that there truly is a tomato recipe for everyone to enjoy! Here are some reasons why we love tomatoes.
First…Why Are Tomatoes A Fruit And Not A Vegetable?
Botanically speaking, a fruit is classified as the part of the plant that bears seeds after the formation of a flower. Now, if you’re speaking to a chef, they might tell you that tomatoes are considered a culinary vegetable; meaning they are considered vegetables for cooking purposes. After all, they’re often prepared alongside other veggies and compliment their savoury flavours. If you ask us, we’d like to think of tomatoes as the best of both worlds!
Health Benefits of Tomatoes
Tomatoes are rich in nutrients, making them a well-rounded and healthy addition to any meal or snack. Tomatoes are rich in fibre, promoting a healthy digestive system, and they’re also high in Potassium, Vitamin K and Folate. We might think of oranges when we want to get our daily dose of Vitamin C, but tomatoes are also loaded with this powerful vitamin, making them great antioxidants to ensure a properly functioning immune system as well.
Lastly, tomatoes are most renowned for being rich in a powerful nutrient called Lycopene. Lycopene is a carotenoid that is found in ripe tomatoes and gives them their vibrant red colouring. In fact, the redder the tomato, the more lycopene you will find! Lycopene will protect cells from damage and can contribute to a healthy heart and even healthy skin. Our bodies are made up of cells, so this nutrient is very valuable to their defence! Lycopene can still be found even in tomato sauces, tomato juice, tomato paste, and even in ketchup!
Tomatoes may take the prize for being the more diverse fruit (and culinary veggie) to cook with since there are endless ways to enjoy your tomatoes and get all of their nutritional benefits. You can enjoy them raw, in a salad or as a snack, or you can cook them into your stir-fries, casseroles or side dishes. Let’s not forget the pizza sauces, pasta sauces, or even in your favourite condiments. Everyone has their own favourite way to enjoy their tomatoes.
